PYTHIAN CASTLE
Located in Springfield, Missouri, stands the impressive Pythian Castle, built in 1913 and opened in 1914, this grand structure was originally a sanctuary for elderly members of the Knights of Pythias, their widows and orphans. Over the decades, its walls have witnessed joy, tragedy and even the supernatural. From its opulent grand foyer and ballroom to its eerie basement dungeon that once housed German and Italian prisoners of war during World War II, the castle’s storied past is as captivating as it is chilling.

With 105 burials, two reported suicides and countless tales of wartime loss, the Pythian Castle has earned its reputation as one of Missouri’s most haunted landmarks. Since opening to the public in 2010, it has become a must-visit destination for history buffs, paranormal investigators and anyone curious about the secrets hidden within its walls.

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY AND HAUNTINGS OF PYTHIAN CASTLE
Pythian Castle is not just a historical landmark, it’s a hotspot for paranormal activity that has left visitors both fascinated and unnerved. Over the years, countless reports of ghostly encounters have solidified it as one of the most haunted locations in Missouri.

During World War I, the castle served as a training centre for soldiers, a period marked by numerous reported deaths during their rigorous training. In World War II, the castle took on a new role, providing care for injured soldiers. Today, many visitors claim to see the apparitions of male and female soldiers in military uniforms seemingly still roaming the castle grounds.

One of the castle’s most famous spirits is the “Lady in White.” Often seen gazing out from the tower window, she is said to appear in a flowing white dress and her presence is described as both haunting and sorrowful. Some have also encountered her near the bathroom or heard her disembodied voice at the main staircase. While her identity remains a mystery, one theory suggests she was a bride tragically killed on her wedding day, her spirit now bound to the castle. Though unverified, this tale does add an air of romantic tragedy to her ghostly appearances.

The basement of the castle, once a dungeon for prisoners of war, is a particularly unsettling area. Visitors often report an overwhelming sense of doom when exploring the dark, confined space. Shadow figures have been spotted lurking in the dungeon and the faint cries of disembodied screams are often heard throughout the halls.

Adding to the castle’s haunting reputation, orbs have been captured in photographs, furniture has reportedly moved on its own, and lights are notorious for flickering. Some have even claimed to see the ghost of a little girl wandering the basement, her presence both innocent and unnerving.
