Foley House Inn – Savannah’s Haunted Bed & Breakfast

FOLEY HOUSE INN

Nestled in the heart of Savannah, Georgia, at 14 Hull Street, the Foley House Inn is more than just a charming bed and breakfast. Built in 1896 by Honoria Foley, this historic home has stood the test of time, witnessing both the triumphs and tragedies of Savannah’s past. But what truly sets the Foley House Inn apart is the eerie energy that seems to linger within its walls.

The Foley House Inn sign marks the entrance to the courtyard, where countless visitors have reported sightings of  spirits.

The inn’s foundation rests on a site believed to be the graves of early settlers and its construction followed the devastating Great Savannah Fire of 1889, which reduced the previous home to ashes. Honoria Foley, a trailblazer in her own right, transformed the house into Savannah’s first-ever bed and breakfast, welcoming guests with Southern hospitality. Yet, beneath its warm exterior lies a darker history.

The Foley House Inn bed and breakfast exudes charm, but its haunting history lingers just beneath the surface.

In 1987, during renovations, construction workers uncovered human skeletal remains hidden behind a wall, adding a haunting layer to the inn’s already mysterious reputation. Today, the Foley Inn continues to operate as one of Georgia’s oldest bed and breakfasts, offering visitors not only a cozy stay but also a brush with the unexplained.

FOLEY HOUSE INN GHOST STORIES

The most chilling tale revolves around skeletal remains discovered behind a wall during renovations in 1987. Though never formally identified, local lore suggests the bones belong to a man who once stayed at the inn and became dangerously infatuated with Honoria Foley. The man’s persistent and unwelcome advances escalated one night when he attacked Honoria in her bedroom. Acting in self defense, she struck him with a candlestick, killing him.

Mrs. Foley’s bedroom at the Foley House Inn is said to be haunted by her restless spirit, along with other unsettled souls.

Fearing that her actions would lead to losing both her freedom and her inn, Honoria enlisted the help of a carpenter friend to conceal the body within the wall. It’s said that she carried the weight of this secret until her deathbed confession in 1914, leaving behind a legacy of whispers and speculation that still haunts the inn today.

The bathroom in Mrs. Foley’s bedroom is a notorious spot where the shadow figure of a man is frequently seen.

Another infamous story dates back to 2008, when a woman staying at the inn claimed she was shoved by a pale, angry-looking man in a top hat, describing him with sunken eyes and dark features, he rushed past her and vanished through a door. Following the sound of his footsteps, she was stunned when they abruptly stopped near a wall. The next day, staff revealed that the footsteps had disappeared at the exact spot where skeletal remains were discovered.

This staircase at the Foley House Inn is the very spot where a body was once discovered hidden inside the wall.

The man in the top hat seems to be a regular presence at the inn, with staff often spotting him wandering the garden late at night. But he’s not the only spirit said to haunt the property. A young girl has been seen in the parlour, her presence marked by an eerie scream that pierces the silence. Guests have also reported hearing strange noises throughout the inn, from heavy footsteps ascending the staircase to unexplained gusts of wind and sudden cold spots.

The stunning parlour of the Foley House Inn exudes timeless elegance, but also hides whispers of its haunting past.
