THE CHAMBER
Tucked away behind The Trembling House of Madness on the historic Stonegate, the Haunted Chamber is one of York’s most unique and atmospheric stays. This Grade II listed apartment sits on the remains of the first Norman house built in York around 1180 AD, blending centuries of history with unmistakable medieval character. Over 600 years old, the timber-framed chamber is filled with original features, from ship-made wooden panelling and floorboards to antique furnishings and curious taxidermy displays lining the walls.

Inside, every corner feels like stepping back into history. A tight spiralling staircase leads to a cosy four-poster bed, while the chamber also includes a standalone bathtub, sofa bed and a small courtyard area for guests to enjoy. With stunning views of York Minster from the windows and countless historic details throughout, the Chamber offers a truly unforgettable stay in the very heart of York.

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY AT THE CHAMBER
With a history stretching back centuries, it’s perhaps no surprise that guests and staff at the Chamber have reported a number of unsettling experiences over the years. While there are no confirmed historical ghost stories directly linked to the building, many visitors believe the ancient atmosphere of the chamber lends itself perfectly for paranormal activity to occur. Staff at the property have even described it as being “very haunted.”

Among the most commonly reported experiences are the sounds of babies crying during the night, unexplained tapping noises and strange sounds echoing throughout the chamber after dark. Some guests have also claimed to feel an eerie presence within the apartment, particularly at night around the sleeping area.

The most chilling report involves a full-bodied apparition allegedly seen standing silently at the end of the four-poster bed. Combined with the chamber’s dim lighting, medieval structure, antique decor and taxidermy displays, it’s easy to understand why many guests leave convinced the building may still hold spirits from its long past.

VISITING THE CHAMBER
The Chamber is far more than just a medieval apartment, it’s a place where history and hauntings appear to intertwine. While no official ghost stories are tied directly to the property, reports of crying babies, unexplained taps, strange noises in the dead of night and even a full-bodied apparition standing at the foot of the bed have left many convinced that The Chamber is truly haunted.

Additionally, there is even a ouija board kept inside the apartment for visitors to use. The staff’s own claims of paranormal activity makes it easy to see why this unusual stay has earned a chilling and haunting reputation. If you’re brave enough to experience it for yourself, you can stay in The Chamber by making an overnight booking and spending the night surrounded by centuries of history and perhaps something else lurking within the shadows.
