The Nunnery – Sacred Shadows and Devoted Spirits

THE NUNNERY

Located on Ranelagh Road in the picturesque town of Malvern, Worcestershire, lies a building filled with history, mystery, and whispers of the supernatural. Known simply as “The Nunnery,” this once-thriving convent has become a focal point for unexplained tales. Built in 1879 by the Community of the Holy Name, at its peak, the convent was a sanctuary for up to 250 nuns.

When night falls, the cross on the roof of the Nunnery silently stands watch over the grounds.

Its sprawling grounds include a grand church at its heart, accommodation blocks used for the sisters, and a chapel added in 1891. Beneath the surface lies a network of expansive basement rooms stretching beneath the entire complex, adding an air of mystery to the already imposing structure. For over a century, The Nunnery served as a place of devotion and quiet reflection. Within its walls, the nuns lived, prayed, and worked, tending to gardens that once flourished with fresh produce.

Under the cover of night, the Nunnery exudes an eerie and haunting presence.

As the years passed, the aging sisters found comfort in the accommodation blocks, but the passage of time brought inevitable change. By the 1960s, the intake of novices had dwindled, and by the mid-1980s, financial struggles forced the community to sell off surrounding land. In 1989, the convent closed its doors for good, and the remaining nuns relocated to a convent in Derby.

The Cloisters, joining the accommodation block and the chapel, where many nuns spent their days.

The Nunnery’s story did not end with its closure. Over time, the building fell into disrepair, its once-pristine halls becoming derelict and dilapidated. In 1994, the Day of Salvation Ministries purchased and partially restored the site, briefly using it as a gospel hall before eventually vacating it.

Even in disrepair, the Nunnery offers a glimpse of its once impressive architecture.

Today, the gardens where the nuns once toiled have been built upon, and the site remains a shadow of its former self. Yet, the echoes of its past linger, stories of the nuns’ graveyard, marked by a towering wooden cross in a secluded wooded corner, and the countless lives that passed through its walls, continue to captivate and haunt those who visit.

At night the chapel seems to come to life with knocks, taps and bangs often reported.
