Binh Hung Hoa Cemetery
The Binh Hung Hoa Cemetery is one of the largest within Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. It has encountered many issues during its lifetime. These are primarily caused due to existing on the outskirts of a huge city, which is constantly expanding and struggling to contain its ever-growing population. There are several residents who have moved into live within the grounds of the cemetery, even going as far as to construct permanent homes. Furthermore, many of these graves have suffered from vandalism and the possibility of relocation, for further urban development of Ho Chi Minh City.
It seems plausible that this insecurity of burial places may have left the living and the dead a little restless. Many claim that the Binh Hung Hoa Cemetery is one of the most haunted places in the city. Though it is thought to contain many wandering spirits, it is one famous and tragic ghost story that prevails.
Ghost Stories of Ho Chi Minh City’s Haunted Cemetery
The most famed of the spirits thought to grace Binh Hung Hoa Cemetery is that of a 16-year-old girl. Her story is a tragic one of lost love. During her life, she was an avid theater performer and was particularly fond of cải lương. This is a popular form of Vietnamese folk opera, often used in dramatic plays.
It was her love for theater that led her to another love. Through her performance groups, she met and fell deeply in love with an attractive young man. Theirs was a forbidden love, which the young girl’s father disapproved of. The girl’s father was so unhappy that his daughter had chosen this man as her partner that he worked to have the man drafted to go off to war. This sadly lead to the man’s death.
Angered and betrayed by her father and suffering from a broken heart, the young girl decided to take her own life. It is said that she committed suicide by jumping into the lake at the Binh Hung Hoa Cemetery, where she drowned. Her body was left sitting in the lake’s waters for 6 days before being discovered.
Ever since her death, many claim that she has remained at the cemetery to haunt it. Some have caught sight of her apparition, whilst others have reported that she sings the tunes of her favorite cải lương songs near the lake’s water by night.
Though the lake has since been filled in and the cemetery continues to crumble and deteriorate around her, many believe that this girl’s spirit remains in sadness at the cemetery.
Visiting Haunted Binh Hung Hoa Cemetery
The Binh Hung Hoa Cemetery sits on the outskirts of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. It is easily accessible by car. I had read reviews stating that the cemetery was located in an unsafe area, though I did not feel this was the case during my own visit. I would however still take caution when visiting. There are no walls or gates surrounding the cemetery, so it can be accessed at any time of the day or night.
If you enjoyed this article and want to learn of other haunted cemeteries. I highly recommend checking out the Lothian Cemetery in India, which also has many interesting stories associated with it.
Thanks for reading!

Hey Amy,
Watch out you just kicked fake money that is burned for the families spirits. The locals take care of the loved ones after death by leaving gifts and incense also the mad man is making sure you are not disturbing the spirits. If you disturb the grave you might have really bad luck to evil spirits. My adopted brother from Viêt Nam family member died and was buried on the wrong day and the Buddhist monk made my brother go through a year of rituals otherwise his brother would haunt my brother. If my brother did nothing he would get sick and die that same year. Watch out for I really do believe the spirits really can hurt you by making you feel tired or sick which if your touched by a ghost could lead to death if you don’t keep a good look at the site of where the ghost touched you. Sorry to bore you. I didn’t mean to talk so much.
Take care, safe, and spooky,
M.J.
