The Eiffel Tower
The Eiffel Tower is one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world. It is a beacon of light within Paris and a sight many find irresistible to visit and photograph. While the tower may not be the first location in Paris people think of when ghosts come to mind, being a place where large cemeteries like Pere Lachaise and even the notorious catacombs exist, it is claimed to be haunted.
Ghost of the Eiffel Tower
The most prevalent ghost stories related to the Eiffel Tower are rooted in love, which seems fitting to the city of Paris, yet these tales are also tragic. The first version of this ghostly love story tells of a young couple who ascended the tower. Believing this to be the perfect place to propose to his girlfriend the young man asked for her hand in marriage. Unfortunately, she rejected his proposal, which sent him into a fit of rage. Overcome with anger, the man pushed his girlfriend with such a force, she was thrust back into the safety railing and sent over the top of it, falling to her death below.
Another similar, tragic story exists, which is likely a different version of the one told above. This story again starts with a young couple making their way to the top of the Eiffel Tower where the man was to propose to the woman. Sadly, once again, this story ends with the woman falling from the tower to her death, but her reason for falling here is different. Supposedly, she was so shocked by the proposal that her reaction was to back away. Speed and poor footing caused her to topple over and fall over the railing to her death.
Each of these stories seems to date back to the 1920s, which is interesting and fitting to the ghost stories of the Eiffel Tower. Many people who have visited the tower have claimed to sight a woman dressed in typical 1920s clothing walking around the upper areas before disappearing into thin air. Some have speculated that this ghostly lady could be the unfortunate girlfriend who fell from the tower years earlier.
Whether there is any truth behind these stories remains to be told, but the tale has managed to cast a small shadow of darkness over one of the most romantic sites in Paris.
