PENUEL CHAPEL
Nestled in the historic Old Chapel Yard in Carmarthenshire, Wales, Penuel Chapel stands as a tribute to centuries of religious dedication and architectural evolution. With the chapel’s origins dating back to 1757 when preacher, Stephen Davies, founded the initial chapel across the road, it gained formal recognition by the Baptist Association in 1778. As the congregation flourished, funds were raised to secure its current site in 1786, leading to a series of extensions and rebuilds. The early 20th century brought substantial renovations, resulting in the exquisite interior we see today, featuring an organ and remarkable Canadian redwood from the 1909-10 restoration.
Penuel Chapel not only reflects a rich historical tapestry but also continues to serve as a vibrant spiritual hub. Upon entering the chapel, the spacious classical design immediately captivates. All four sides are framed by elegant galleries, their corners gracefully curved and embellished with striking panels. Nestled within a gallery recess, the magnificent organ stands as an awe-inspiring centrepiece. Recognised as a Grade II listed building, Penuel Chapel is ingeniously designed to offer unobstructed views of the pulpit and organ from every pew.
HISTORY, ARTEFACTS AND THE SUPERNATURAL AT PENUEL CHAPEL
Penuel Chapel is celebrated as a sacred space where the kingdom of God was believed to manifest on earth. By the late 19th century, under the leadership of Rev. W. S. Jones, it became a beacon of faith, known for miraculous healings and supernatural events. After experiencing a profound baptism of power, Rev. Jones inspired a community deeply rooted in faith. Until 1904, he guided the Baptist congregation, awed by the countless blessings and miracles, to turn away from medicine and surgery, trusting wholeheartedly in the power of divine healing within the chapel’s walls.
Since taking ownership, renowned paranormal researchers Laura and Erik Rowton have devoted themselves to preserving the history and heritage of Penuel Chapel. Their passion extends to managing a remarkable collection of artefacts, each with their own spiritual or paranormal tale to tell. Among the fascinating items on display is a piece from the infamous Amityville House, offering visitors a chance to explore these extraordinary stories and uncover the mysteries they hold.
In January 2024, Laura and Erik Rowton purchased a Ouija board from an online marketplace as a paranormal collectible but the board soon revealed a darker nature. Just four days into its stay, the Rowtons were plagued with terrifying nightmares that even affected their pets. Laura was gripped by a terrifying sensation of paralysis, convinced an invisible presence watched over her and Erik as they slept. Desperate for relief, they moved the board to an outbuilding and peace quickly returned. Intrigued, Laura contacted the previous owner, who admitted to having similar nightmares despite never using the board. These unsettling experiences have earned it the ominous nickname, ‘The Nightmare Board,’ and is on display inside the museum.
Just beyond the chapel door lies a serene graveyard, full of weathered headstones that have stood for centuries, each holding their own story. This sacred space is set to be lovingly restored by Laura and Erik, whose dedication to the restoration of this peaceful resting place will honour the memory of those who came before while preserving its quiet beauty for future generations to come and visit.
