Ghosts of Ye Olde Starre Inne: Haunted Pub in York, England

Ye Olde Starre Inne

The Ye Olde Starre Inne is one of the most prominent drinking establishments in York, England. The bustling pub is also one of the oldest in town, being established back in 1644 and containing some areas, such as its cellar, which date back even further. This cellar boasts almost as much history, if not more, than the pub built above it. It dates back to the 10th century and was even used as a military hospital and mortuary during the brunt of the English Civil War.

Although the pub has changed ownership numerous times during its long history and slowly been hidden away by buildings now surrounding it, it remains a popular destination for those seeking a cold pint. Today, visitors are directed down a small alley via a sign that has hung above Stonegate since the 1700s to visit the Ye Olde Starre Inne. While the pub has changed over the years, somethings remain in place, with one of these being the pub’s many ghosts.

Ghosts of Ye Olde Starre Inne

A number of ghosts are said to have taken up residence within the Ye Olde Starre Inne over the years, with many considering it to be one of the most haunted places in York. One of the most active areas of the building is said to be its cellar. This makes sense considering its history of being used as a makeshift wartime hospital. One of the most common and chilling paranormal occurrences happening within the cellar is the sounds of people crying out in pain. These sounds are completely unexplainable as they occur even when the cellar is empty, leading many to speculate they could only be caused by the spirits of dying soldiers treated down there during the Civil War.

Plenty of other spirits are said to dwell in the pub with one more of these seeming to be connected to the pub’s history with the war. Plenty of people claim to have sighted the spirit of a Royalist Officer roaming around the premises, still decked out in wartime apparel.

Another spirit, that of an elderly lady wearing black, has also been spotted within Ye Olde Starre Inne. She is typically sighted moving up the staircase in the old pub though her origins and background remain a mystery. Interestingly, her spirit has only reportedly been sighted by children.

Finally, people have also claimed to sight the ghosts of two black felines. These ghostly cats are typically spotted around the bar, which is where their bodies are said to exist. These cats were supposedly encased behind a wall near the bar, fitting with superstitions of the time and area to bring luck to a new building.
